Love - это чувство люви, а like - что-то типа мне нравится.  i love my wife - я люблю свою жену, имеется ввиду сильная привязанность, чувство. i like my girlfriend - мне нравится моя подружка, то есть мне с ней клево тусить, но не более! i love my dog и i like my dog - с животными чаще употребляется like, но если употребить love, то это будет значить, что собака не просто ваш питомец, но и полноправный член семьи, также нельзя сказать i love books, ибо love применимо только к одушевленным предметам. есть небольшие исключения, например, краткое выражение "love it" - употребляется в разговорной лексике, типа обожаю по-нашему.)
