Russia or the russian federation (russian. russia ipa: [rɐsʲːijə], n. the russian federation) - a state in northern eurasia mixed federal republic. it shares borders with sixteen countries [5] (the largest figure in the world): dry land - with norway, finland, estonia, latvia, lithuania and poland (both past - from kaliningrad oblast), belarus, ukraine, georgia, azerbaijan, kazakhstan, china, mongolia and north korea; has maritime borders with japan by the sea of okhotsk sea, the united states - by the bering strait. with an area of 17,098,246 km², russia is the largest country by area in the world, covering more than one eighth of the land area, the ninth largest population of 143 million (2012). extends across northern asia, approximately 26.5% in eastern europe. it covers nine time zones, includes a wide range of environmental conditions and terrain. according to the constitution of the russian federation are composed of 85 subjects (including the territories occupied ukrainian [6] crimea and sevastopol), 46 of which are referred to as areas 22 - republics, nine - edges, three - federal cities, four - autonomous districts and one - an autonomous region.
