When we talk about endangered species, we might mention a sea turtle, a giant panda, or maybe even an Asian elephant, but we rarely think of a shark. It comes as no surprise when we see sharks in movies, TV shows and books are portrayed as human-eating for 30 years by 90%, mainly due to illegal fishing. Sharks may be at the top of the food chain, but they are vital to predators. In fact, the shark population has dropped dramatically, supporting the ecosystem. When their number decreases, the natural balance of the oceans is disrupted. One man, Rob Stewart, is dedicated to raising awareness of sharks, whose bad reputation he believes is completely undeserved. “Sharks kill about 5 people a year and yet they are hated,” he says. "Elephants kill at least 100 people, but when a single elephant falls in Africa, the world goes crazy." Stewart first became interested in sharks as a child, and after graduating in marine biology became a wildlife photographer. While on a business trip to the Galapagos Islands, one of the most protected marine reserves in the world, he came across hundreds of dead sharks dangling from a 60-kilometer commercial fishing line. If such illegal fishing is possible there, then what is happening in the rest of the world? He found that up to 100 million sharks die each year and a third of the 500 shark species are endangered. Shark fins are incredibly valuable as a luxury item, especially for use in shark fin soup. Dried fins cost as much as $ 300 per pound, but shark fins are thrown away. However, people are not as concerned about shark overkill as koalas are. Stewart decided that the best way to show the world what was happening was to make a documentary. After spending his life savings watching a DVD on his laptop and learning the basics of filmmaking, he traveled to Costa Rica, where he swam with sharks and even hugged them while filming his film.
