I played football — это Past Simple, то есть говорится о простом времени, о совершённом действии в .

I was playing football — это Past Continuous, то есть говорится о совершаемом в времени.

В русском языке тоже есть глаголы совершённые и несовершённые. Например, "сыграл" — это совершённый глагол, а "играл" — несовершённый.

Казалось бы что оба из времен это времена. Но есть разница. "I played football" - обычное время (past simple) обозначается разовое действие. Пример: я купил воду. I bought water

А "I was playing" это продолженное время. Действие которое продолжалось в течении некоторого времени в . Пример "I was playing basketball.
