У пятнистых гиен желтовато-серая шерсть, покрытая тёмно-коричневыми или чёрными пятнами, кажется постоянно взъерошенной. У гиен мощные чёрные лапы которые заканчиваются тупыми когтями. Чёрный нос гиены служит чутким органом одного из самых важных для гиены чувств - обоняния. Все гиены довольно хорошо видят в темноте и при свете. У пятнистых гиен линия спины покатая. Голова гиены довольно похожа на голову большой собаки. Кончик морды тёмный. Гиены из семейства кошачьих. Продолжительность жизни 20 лет.

Spotted hyenas have a sloping back line. The head of a hyena is quite similar to that of a large dog. The tip of the muzzle is dark. Feline hyenas. Life expectancy is 20 years.
