You'll turn on your television, radio or computer. They are the sources that most people use to get their news and information. They are called mass media.
Apart from radio and television, media also includes the Internet, films, and printed publications (books, magazines, newspapers, tabloids). Everyone can always find something interesting.
Mass media informs, educates and entertains people. It is known that mass media plays a crucial role in forming public opinion. The way the information is provided forms people's opinion or makes them change their views and their attitude to current events. Some TV and radio stations and newspapers belong to big corporations and are widely used for advertising their goods. Of course, most people are not happy with the great amount of advertising on mass media but they can do nothing about it.
Mass media also plays a crucial role in educating people, there are many educational radio programmes and television channels that you can learn from, like the National Geographic Channel and the Discovery Channel. In Russia lots of people enjoy watching the Kultura Channel. The Internet also contributes to education and learning. With the information on the Internet, one could learn anything from cooking biscuits to building a smart house.
As for entertainment, there is a wide choice of opportunities too. One can watch musical and dance shows, enjoy broadcasts of classical operas or watch the latest hit film on line.
By definition, mass media is a two-way process. You can not only receive information but you can also share your ideas via mass media.
