Traditionally English people have three meals a day: breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Breakfast is served in the morning. It used to be a large meal with cereal, eggs and bacon, sausages, tomatoes. But such a large breakfast takes a long time to prepare and is not very healthy. Nowadays, Britain’s most popular breakfast consists of cereal, toast with marmalade, juice and yogurt with a cup of tea or coffee.
Lunch is a light meal. Most people have no time to go back home for lunch so they eat at school, cafes, pubs or restaurants.
The main meal is dinner, which is usually between 6 and 7 p.m. A typical evening meal is a meat dish with vegetables and dessert.
The most important meal of the week is the Sunday dinner, which is usually eaten at 1p.m. The traditional Sunday dish used to be roast beef, but nowadays pork, chicken or lamb are more common.
On Sunday evenings people have supper or high tea. The famous British afternoon tea is becoming rare, except at weekends.
Some people criticize English food. They say it’s unimaginable, boring, tasteless, it’s chips with everything and totally overcooked vegetables.
If you ask foreigners to name some typically English dishes, they will probably say “ Fish and chips” then stop. It is disappointing, but true that, there is no tradition in England of eating in restaurants, because the food doesn’t lend itself to such preparation. English cooking is found at home.
In most cities in Britain you’ll find Indian , Chinese, French and Italian restaurants. In London you’ll also find Indonesian, Mexican, Greek…
For most British families, Christmas is the most important festival of the year. This is the day when many people are travelling home to be with their families. There are a lot of traditions connected with Christmas but the most important one is the giving of presents. Family members wrap up their gifts and leave them at the bottom of the Christmas tree to be bound on Christmas morning. At some time on Christmas Day the family will sit down to a big turkey dinner followed by Christmas pudding.
In the afternoon they may watch the Queen on the television as she delivers her traditional Christmas message to the United Kingdom. Then they enjoy a piece of Christmas cake or eat a hot mince pie. On the Sunday before Christmas many churches hold a service where special hymns are sung. Most families decorate their houses with brightly-colored paper or holly, and they usually have a Christmas tree in the corner of the room, glittering with coloured lights and decoration. 26th December is also a public holiday, called Boxing Day. This is time to visit friends and relatives or be a spectator at one of the many sporting events. Everyone in Great Britain is waiting and enjoying this holiday very much.
