The Moscow Art Theatre appeared in 1898. Konstantin Stanislavski together with the playwright and director Nemirovich-Danchenko (1) at first founded it to stage plays in contrast to the melodramas that were Russia's dominant form of theatre life at the time. (2) the

theatre staged Anton Chekhov's four major works and quickly became famous. (3)

the production of "The Seagull" was so successful that (4) the theatre decided to

have the seagull as its emblem. Everybody in the country knew many famous actors of the

theatre. The theatre continued its work after the October Revolution of 1917 and (5)

it became one of the leading theatres of the Soviet Union. It is important to say that (6)

of the 20th century the theatre staged the dramatic work of Maxim Gorky but (7) in

1904 there was a disagreement with Nemirovich, and Gorky decided not to have further relationship with the organization though in 1932 the theatre officially got a different name and became The Gorky Moscow Art Theatre. In 1987 the theatre split into two troupes. The Chekhov Moscow Art Theatre located in Tverskaya Street had Oleg Efremov as its Artistic Director. (8) Tatyana Doronina headed the second troupe.
