1 By the time she was three, Matilda had taught herself to read by studying newspapers and magazines that lay around the house. At the age of four, she could read fast and well.

2 Matilda's  father thought she should watch the telly instead of reading books.

3 Matilda decided to read books in the public library in the village.

4 Mrs Phelps was taken aback because she saw a tiny girl who had arrived at the library without a parent.

5 Matilda thought some children's books were very poor, but others were lovely.
