почему  в этом предложении  глагол в прошедшем времени?

 

could  употребляется в дополнительном придаточном предложении (после глагола  to wishжелать) для обозначения нереального , желаемого действия в сослагательном наклонении, относящегося к настоящему или будущему времени.

how i wish i could live somewhere in the countryside

как  я хотела бы жить где-нибудь в деревне.
