родители мальчика являлись небогатыми, из-за чего у него были регулярные проблемы с устройством в школе. сначала бенджамин франклин, биография которого известна любому американцу, поменял учебное заведение после первого класса, а потом и вовсе был вынужден прекратить обучение, чтобы отцу в мыловаренной лавке.

впрочем, бытовые невзгоды не помешали мальчику сохранить природное любопытство. в свободное время он много читал и с жадностью погружался в любую попадавшуюся книгу. с детства он увлекся иностранными языками. уже в зрелом возрасте политик знал испанский, французский, итальянский и латинский. лингвистические навыки ему на протяжении всей жизни.
