There were many islands in the south pacific. these were tropical islands. the weather was warm all year round. the trees on the island in the picture were coconut palms. they were very useful because they grew well in sandy and salty places near the seashore where other kinds of trees could not grew. the coconuts gave food. the islanders could dry the nuts and sold them to make oil. they could also use the trunks of the trees for building and the leaves for making roofs for their houses.
