Australia is the biggest island in the world and it's the smallest continent. It's 30 times bigger than Great Britain. Also it's one of the oldest lands in the world. Australian landscape isn't boring at all. There are some mountains along the east coast and some along the West coast, the centre of the country is very flat. There are beautiful flat deserts, great salt lakes, interesting plants (растения) and animals. The most famous Rock is Ayers Rock. It's a very special place in central Australia. Native (коренные) Australians call it Uluru and believe it is holy (священный). There are only 24 million people in Australia. In fact most of them live in the cities of the east coast. Australia was discovered by captain James Cook in 1770. But the first European visitors were the Dutch and settled there in 1616. Australia is a unique country. If you look at the sky you will see that even the stars are different.
