" we stared into the fog, uncertain what horror was about to break from the heart of it. then, a dreadful shape sprung out from the shadows. it was an enormous coal-black hound. fire burst from its open mouth and its eyes were burning in the darkness. with long bounds the huge creature was leaping down the track, far following our friend. away on the path we saw sir henry looking back, his face white in the moonlight, his hands raised in horror, staring helplessly at the thing which was chasing him.

Займенник this / these вказують на предмети, що знаходяться досить близько від доповідача, на відміну від that / those, які вказують на предмети, що є більш віддаленими: this is not my car, mine is that one. – це не моя машина, а то – моя. за схожим принципом є використання вказівних займенників для позначення подій у часі: this / theseвикористовується для позначення теперішніх або більш близьких подій у часі, ніж тих, на котрі вказує that / those: this happened not so long ago in contrast to that event. – це відбулося не так давно, на відміну від тієї події. проте займенник that також може використовуватися у значенні “цей“. наприклад, у наступних фразах: what‘s that? – що це таке? who is that? — хто це? who did that? — хто це зробив? is that correct? – це правильно? that‘s right. — вірно.також зверніть увагу, що використовувати вказівний займенник для прямої вказівки на якусь особу, крім ситуації знайомства, вважається нечемним: this is my mate john. – це мій знайомий джон. при використанні займенника this зі словами country, city та іншими, що вказують місце перебування доповідача, під вказівним займенником розуміється та країна, місто або місце, в якому зараз він знаходиться. тому при перекладі речень треба враховувати контекст розмови: i find the system of education in this country too confusing. – американська система навчання мені здається надто заплутаною. (доповідач знаходиться в сша) словосполучення that of / those of може заміняти використаний раніше іменник. ця конструкція використовується для уникнення повторення: the mountains of tibet are higher than those of the carpathians. – тибетські гори вищі, ніж карпатські. вказівні займенники such (такий, така, таке, такі) та same (той самий, такий самий) не змінюються за числами.such зазвичай вказує на якість предмета: such small details will make your apartment look better. - такі маленькі деталі зроблять вигляд вашої квартири кращим. займенник same використовується з означеним артиклем i had the same thoughts. – в мене були такі ж самі думки.
