the term "acid rain" was coined in 1872 by robert angus smith, a scottish chemist.

when coal and petroleum are burned in automobiles, electric power plants, and factories, they release harmful gases into the air. these gases combine with the oxygen and water in the air and form acid rain.

acid rain can have harmful effects on plants, animals and humans. when acid rain gets in the water such as streams, lakes and rivers, it changes the ph and makes the water toxic to the fish and other life in the water.
