Главное отличие между was и were очевидно: мы используем were, когда речь идет о множественном числе, то есть более чем об одном предмете или лице. Например. They were late - Они опоздали. Was в свою очередь употребляется, когда речь идет о единственном числе, то есть об одном предмете или лице.
