1. at 17, i a pplied to university 2. i got a place at manchester to study engineering 3. in fact i was awarded a scholarship . 4. but at the end of the first year i changed to another subject. 5. i graduated from university in 1988. 6. i have a first class  honours degree in economics. 7. i decided to stay on at university. 8. so i did a higher degree in business administration at the university of california. 8. i found the topic so interesting that i applied for a grant to do a doctorate on the same subject. 9. once i had got the money, i had to write a 50,000 word thesis. 10. all i need now is a job.
