the name of the city was first mentioned in chronicles 9 centuries ago; it was founded in 1147 (by prince yuri dolgoruky. the city became the capital of russia in the 16th century under ivan the terrible. though in 1712 peter the great moved the capital to st petersburg, after the october revolution in 1918 moscow became the capital again.

the heart of moscow is red square. the kremlin and st basil’s cathedral (vasily blazheny) are masterpieces of ancient russian architecture. the main kremlin tower, the spasskaya tower, has become the symbol of the country. on the territory of the kremlin you can see old cathedrals, the bell tower of ivan the great, the palace of congresses, the tzar-cannon and the tzar-bell, the biggest cannon and bell in the world. st basil’s cathedral was built in the mid-16th century in memory of the victory over the kazan kingdom (the tartar yoke). there is a legend that ivan the terrible blinded the architects barma and postnik, because he didn’t want them to create another masterpiece. the monument to minin and pozharsky was built in 1818 who were heroes of the people’s struggle
