оборот there is - there are обозначает, что что-то где-то находится.

как и в любом другом случае во мн. числе употребляем глаголы are или were, а в ед.числе соответственно is или was.

there are some books on the table. - на столе несколько книжек.

there were some books on the table. - на столе было несколько книжек.

вы обратили внимание, что перевод такого оборота начинается с конца предложения? это праавильно.

при вопросе глагол to be (is, are, was,were) выносим на первое место и не забываем про слово there!  

are there  any books on the table? - на столе есть   книжки? (обратите внимание на изменения слова some, но это совсем другая )

were there any books on the table? - на столе были книжки?

при составлении отрицания после глагола to be  (is, are, was,were) ставим частицу not   и не забываем про слово there!  

there aren't any books on the table. - на столе нет книжек.

there weren't any books on the table. - на столе не было книжек.

означает, что где-то что-то есть, если нет прямого :   there are four chairs in the classroom - в классе четыре стула. there is используется для единственного числа, а there are - для

Summer holidays        summer holidays are the longest holidays. i like them very much! i have a lot of time for myself. i spend most time outdoors.         in june i went to the  seaside with my parents. the water in the black sea  was very warm. we swam in  the  sea  and  sunbathed on the beach.  there were different kinds of entertainments there. we also  played volleyball on the beach and  made castles of sand. on hot days we walked in the park.  it was very beautiful there.         then i spent two weeks in the summer camp. i made a lot of new friends. every day we enjoyed something special - games, competitions, performances. there was no river,  but there was a swimming pool where we could swim.  we had discos every night.  it was a real fun.     in august i  visited my grandparents.  there i enjoyed fresh air  and helped  my grandparents  to dig the garden, to gather fruit and vegetables. i went fishing with my grandfather.       i relaxed last summer and prepared for a new school year.
